Slim Volumes

Poetry by Phil Rees

Not Rocket Surgery

Whoever thought that it was sound to dig
Poison out of the ground so that it could
Irradiate more poison in a rig
To boil some water; they just boil my blood.

When things go wrong, just as they have and will,
Apologists chorus “How could we know?
We thought that it was safe … and it is still!
Lightening won’t strike two times in a row!”

The consequences of so rare a failure
(Million to one shots nine times out of ten)
Are dire enough they might as well impale you.
Money and power cloak risks where they can.

We’re fools to trust with our safety and fate
Some careless pawed inattentive primate.
