Poetry by Phil Rees

Haiku 49

blissful exhaustion
this silent morning, baby
sleeps peaceful at last

Asymptomatic

unfeeling
and unnerved
disturbed
absent
an unveiling pain
complaining
would seem like disdain
or feigning
so I just
remain

Haiku 48

autumnal hubbub
crisp as dried leaves, their voices
drown slow breaking waves

Physiology

thought ruled empty meat
I rode a shell

no more

the shell rides me
filled to bursting
this cornucopia
triggers receptors
twitching lethargically
collapsing between
unwanted states
don’t laugh
i cry
but still the flesh
throbs with every pulse
squeezing thin blood
laced
with angry fatigue

Haiku 47

from spring to winter’s

end, when i will rot or burn,

i sculpt a lifetime

Haiku 46

concussion of moths

from last night’s window, mourning

scattered on the deck

Haiku 45

in sunburned garden

hot foot the deck, lay blissful

naked in the shade

Haiku 44

vultures on thermals
above tai chi set, fuck off
not getting me yet

Haiku 43

high on the thermals
crows mobbing eagles, cawing
hey get off my land

Haiku 42

my son’s morning nap
traffic and birdsong, a duet
an odd lullaby
